Rituals

My bed time rituals don’t vary very much.

First I put my paw on Mum’s arm and nag her “come on, it’s bed time!”. Sometimes she gets cross because my nails scratch her – I try not to let that happen because I hate having my nails cut. It’s so undignified (and unmasculine) for a boy to endure a pedicure!

Then I run to the bedroom to choose my favourite sock. I love socks! Apparently I have a sock fetish.

Such variety!

Which to choose?

The other day Mum noticed a strange bump on the side of my nose. She puts some ointment on it every day and now it’s shrinking (the bump, not my nose).

It’s embarrassing to have a yellow stain on the side of my face so I try to run away but she catches me every time.

This is my favourite sock. It's my Dad's.

Then I play with my Cat for a while. She’s not as interested in socks as I am.

And then I go to bed.

Stream of Consciousness Saturday

Pat, Pet, Pit, Pot, Put

My Mum dropped something on my foot!

She was cooking something in the pot

She dropped that pot – it weighs a lot!

I cried. I wailed. And then I sat

And Mum she gave my head a pat.

I’m just a dog, a little pet

“Mum! Please take me to the vet!”

But I am tough, like Pete The Pit

And now it doesn’t hurt one bit.

This is my entry for this week’s Stream of Consciousness Saturday:

Here are the rules:

1. Your post must be stream of consciousness writing, meaning no editing, (typos can be fixed) and minimal planning on what you’re going to write.

2. Your post can be as long or as short as you want it to be. One sentence – one thousand words. Fact, fiction, poetry – it doesn’t matter. Just let the words carry you along until you’re ready to stop.

3. There will be a prompt every week. I will post the prompt here on my blog on Friday, along with a reminder for you to join in. The prompt will be one random thing, but it will not be a subject. For instance, I will not say “Write about dogs”; the prompt will be more like, “Make your first sentence a question,” or “Begin with the word ‘The’.”

4. Ping back! It’s important, so that I and other people can come and read your post! For example, in your post you can write “This post is part of SoCS:” and then copy and paste the URL found in your address bar at the top of this post into yours.  Your link will show up in my comments, for everyone to see. The most recent pingbacks will be found at the top.

5. Read at least one other person’s blog who has linked back their post. Even better, read everyone’s! If you’re the first person to link back, you can check back later, or go to the previous week, by following my category, “Stream of Consciousness Saturday,” which you’ll find right below the “Like” button on my post.

6. Copy and paste the rules (if you’d like to) in your post. The more people who join in, the more new bloggers you’ll meet and the bigger your community will get!

7. Have fun!

MY Blog!

When I first started blogging Mum let me start up using her blog, mainly because we were both new at this and didn’t really know how to do it properly.

But when I wanted to reply to comments or follow other awesome dog blogs I could only do it using Mum’s name and that was embarrassing. And demeaning. As if I don’t have my own voice!

Yesterday we put our heads together and decided to fix that and after a lot of fiddling about and Googling (wouldn’t Google be an awesome dog name?), and a tiny bit of swearing (that was Mum. My manners are faultless) we did it! Same blog, different place and now I can do whatever I want without having to ask Mum to do it for me.

After a couple of false starts (if you’re ever going to try this it’s best not to use the Export/Import option – while you get to keep your blog posts, you lose followers, themes and all that other stuff) in the end it was a pretty simple process. I got myself an email address (how cool is that?!), opened my own WordPress account and then we used the Transfer Blog option (some VERY scary warnings before you do that! But we were clever and had backed everything up before – using the Export option – in case we lost everything and had to start again) and Mum transferred ownership of Tikkie of the Bushveld to me! And the best bit is that I got to keep all my awesome followers (and I didn’t have to start over again gathering all those delicious stats – unlike Mum I’m kind of into numbers and things) – I was worried about that.

So. Welcome to MY blog! Yay!

So Much For Valentines Day

This morning I saw Mum picking a rose in the garden.

“Oooh yay!” I thought, “flowers for me!”.  After all it is Valentines Day.

I got so excited and jumped around Mum’s legs while she was walking into the house holding a single pink rose. Higher and higher until I caught the flower in my mouth and pulled it out of her hand.

Mum laughed at me and said that the rose was for Dad, not me and now I feel embarrassed.

An Undignified Evening

I had a very strange evening the other night.

It was around dinner time, Mum was in the shower, Dad was reading and my tummy was beginning to grumble when all hell broke loose.

Dad had just got up and was walking towards the food bag when he suddenly started yelling at Mum. She yelled something back, came rushing out of the bathroom with tangled, wet hair, grabbed me and The Cat and shoved us both into the cupboard.

It’s quite big in there but there’s not much to do. The Cat and I played a little but she soon got bored and jumped up onto a shelf to sharpen her claws on Dad’s trousers. Then she went to sleep. All that was left for me to do was sniff around a bit for rats (there were none) and lizards (none of those either) and then also sleep.

After a while Mum came in with our dinner and some water. She said something about snakes, being sorry and that it was for our own good before closing the door on us again. OK, the food was good – there were even bones – but how can being shut up in the cupboard with a sleeping cat be ‘good for me’?

Sometimes I really don’t understand people.

The Perils of Pond Swimming

Being cute and adorable is hot and thirsty work and usually at the end of the day – when we get home from the office, or from a drive to town – the first thing I do is jump into the fish pond to cool down and to have a long, cold drink (Mum always takes water in the car for me but there’s something about the taste of pond water …).

This last week has been hotter than before and I’ve spent a lot of time in the pond. Jump in, get wet, jump out, run around, get dry, jump in again. You get the idea?

Why do the others Always copy what I do?

Why do the others Always copy what I do?

Yesterday morning my foot started to get very sore.

Can you see my foot is sore?

Can you see my foot is sore?

Well, it was sore and itchy at the same time and I didn’t know whether to scratch or lick so I did both. When I went to bed Mum noticed I was licking and scratching and licking and scratching. She asked me what was wrong and called me to sit on her bed so that she could have a look at my foot.

Mum! My foot's sore!

Mum! My foot’s sore!

She pushed and prodded and pulled the hair this way and that while I wriggled and tried to get away from her. Mum kept saying “Keep still. I know this hurts, but it is for your own good”. How can something that hurts so much be good for you? It was so sore it made me howl!

Then the pushing stopped and she showed me what she had taken out of my foot. It was a maggot. Yuk!

Mum explained to me that in this hot weather the flies come out to breed – Mum calls them Putsi (rhymes with footsie – pretty apt I thought) Flies. They lay their eggs on warm, moist, furry things  – like my hair after I have been swimming. The eggs hatch into maggots which bury into the flesh of their host (me). When they have eaten and grown they hatch out as new flies. How disgusting!

Today Mum is going to buy some dip from the chemist – I really hope that will keep the flies off me because I don’t want to have to stop swimming.

I Arrive in Zambia

I was born on the 22nd of January 2013 in a small town in the North West Province of South Africa called Stilfontein.  About then Mum had started to look for a new puppy – she told me that the family was just not the same without a Schnauzer being part of it – so she phoned Dolphie’s birth parents, they told her about me and a few weeks later I got a passport and went on a long, scary journey.

I arrived at my new town’s airport very, very frightened. It was hot and noisy and I was very thirsty. Then I heard Mum’s voice for the first time; she hugged me and kissed me and took me outside to the shade of a tree and gave me some cold water to drink. And I fell in love. I love my Mum most of all the people I know.

What just happened to me?

To welcome me to my new home Mum and Dad took me out on the boat. I love being on the boat but like I’ve said before Mum says I’m too bouncy and she is afraid I will jump overboard. The river is not a safe place to swim in and there are lots of crocodiles, so these days I don’t get to go on the boat much any more.

At first the other dogs didn’t like me and they ignored me – I think it was because they could smell I was frightened – but now everyone listens when I speak (except perhaps the cat. But she is my friend, so I don’t mind).
